I. HISTORICAL ORIGIN

At the end of the Spring and Autumn Period, Lu Ban, a famous carpenter in ancient China, often worked in the field. If it rained, he was often wet. Luban’s wife wanted to make something that would keep out the rain. She cut bamboo into thin strips and covered them with animal skins, which looked like “pavilions” and were folded like sticks and opened like covers. This was the first umbrella. After the advent of paper, people painted their umbrellas with watercress oil, and the literati also wrote poems and paintings on the surface of the umbrellas before applying the oil, to relieve their feelings. Oil paper umbrellas were spread to Japan and Korea in the Tang Dynasty, and they were called “Tang umbrellas” in early Japan. After they were spread to other Asian regions, such as Vietnam, Thailand and Laos, they were combined with local culture and had their own styles and names.

It was called green oil paper umbrella in the Song Dynasty. After that, there were improvements in the past dynasties, including paper umbrella, oil umbrella and bat umbrella, which finally formed the public articles of today. It has been used for more than 1000 years. Song Ying-Hsing ‘s “Heavenly Works” says: “All umbrellas and oil fans are made of small vellum,” and Shen Kuo’ s “on the Pen of Mengxi” also says: “With a new red oil umbrella, it will be covered in Japan.” According to the Records of Luxian County in the 8th year of Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty, Lu made (tung oil) paper umbrellas, which are quite famous. There are more than 20 companies in the city chamber industry, and there are many such people in Chongyi watershed. The best one is made by watershed, which is originally beautiful and has six blessings, and the work is exquisite

The legacy is not just the skill. A good umbrella needs to go through hundreds of processes, and hundreds of tools need to go through thousands of tests. When we hold up an oil paper umbrella, it is not only rain that winds down from the umbrella surface in rainy days, but also the vicissitudes of Chinese civilization. It not only symbolizes the ingenuity of handicraft art, but also integrates the spirit and cultural accomplishment of the Chinese nation, carries the oriental aesthetic lifestyle with rich artistic conception for thousands of years, and reposes people’s yearning for a better life.
